Do I need a high SPF to be safe?

An SPF of 30 gives you 97% protection from the sun. An SPF 50 gives you 98% protection. Not much difference but if your SPF 50 comes off in sweat or water, you will have less protection than you think you do. An SPF of 30 is more than adequate for several days in the sun but to get the best protection, choose a product that stays at SPF 30 the whole time you are wearing it and won’t come off in water or perspiration. Pro-Tect® Sunscreens are completely impervious to water and will stay on all day in salt water, fresh water, perspiration, extreme activity, and even drying off with a towel. The FDA requires all sunscreens to print “Reapply after 80 minutes of submersion in water or perspiring” on their labels, but try this experiment. Apply your favorite sunscreen to the palms of your hands and let it dry. Add a few drops of water and stir it around. If the water does anything other than stay perfectly clear, your favorite sunscreen isn’t truly waterproof.
